Spinal Manipulative Therapy (SMT)
SMT is when the chiropractor uses force to move the joints. Sometimes a "crack" or "pop" sound may be heard during the manipulation. SMT is designed to alleviate pressure on the joint in order to restore mobility and reduce inflammation as well as improve nerve conduction. It is often used to treat back, neck, shoulder, and headache pain.
Acupuncture is when small needle filaments are inserted into muscles and joints. It is designed to improve blood flow to the injured area in order to promote healing and decrease pain.
The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic sacral analysis and diversified adjustment. It is specifically useful for correcting pelvic imbalances during pregnancy. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce low back and pelvic pain.
Muscle Release Therapy (MRT)
MRT is where pressure and stretch are applied to the muscles in order to release tension. It is designed to improve mobility and function of muscles and joints.
Smart Tools is a form of instrument-assisted soft tissue manipulation (IASTM) where the chiropractor uses a stainless steel tool with a smooth edge to release muscle tissue and fascial adhesion. It is designed to improve mobility and function of the muscles and joints.
Taping can be used to improve blood flow, reduce inflammation and bruising and add support to the injured joint or muscle.
Therapeutic exercise is where the chiropractor will prescribe postural strengthening, mobility exercise and stretching to aid in correcting the faulty movement pattern that is causing pain and dysfunction.
ART is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART.
Sole Supports are custom fit orthotics that are created from a mold of your feet. This contact will provide full support to your arch, giving you the corrected posture that you need. Orthotics have been found to help with the following conditions: plantar fasciitis/heel pain, Achilles tendonosis, metatarsalgia, over pronation, bunions, back/hip/leg/knee pain, leg length discrepancy, foot arthritis and Morton's neuroma.
Shockwave therapy is a multidisciplinary device used in orthopaedics, physiotherapy, sports medicine, and urology. Its main assets are fast pain relief and mobility restoration. Together with being a non-surgical therapy with no need for painkillers makes it an ideal therapy to speed up recovery and cure various indications causing acute or chronic pain.

What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a regulated health care profession that uses hands on manual therapy to assess, diagnose and treat dysfunctions of the joints, muscles and nerves.
What is a Chiropractor?
A chiropractor is a highly trained primary health care provider that focuses on muscle and joint pain and dysfunction. Chiropractors take a holistic approach to health and wellness, and provide an individualized treatment plan combining manual therapies such as: spinal manipulation, soft tissue therapy and therapeutic rehabilitation.
What is a spinal adjustment and is it safe for me?
Spinal manipulation is the act of applying a fast thrust through the spine for the intention of restoring movement to the restricted spinal segment. Spinal manipulation is beneficial to reduce pain and inflammation and correct movement dysfunction.
Is neck adjusting safe?
As with any form of manual therapy, a thorough history and physical examination must be conducted to determine if a neck adjustment is recommended for you. In the absence of contraindications, neck manipulation is an effective therapy to reduce neck pain, nerve entrapment and headache.
What if I don't want to be adjusted; can I still see a chiropractor?
Yes! Chiropractors provide many therapy options in addition to spinal manipulation. Some of those include: muscle-release therapy, acupuncture, taping and therapeutic rehabilitation to name a few. Chiropractors focus on patient-centered care, so being open and honest with your practitioner will enable them to form an appropriate care plan for you!
Do chiropractors only treat back pain?
No! Contrary to popular belief, chiropractors are trained in musculoskeletal assessment and treatment for the entire body- arms and legs included. Do not hesitate to contact your chiropractor for an injury to your wrist, elbow, shoulder, ankle, knee or hip.
What do chiropractors treat?
Chiropractors treat a variety of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction including:
- Neck Pain
- Back Pain
- Sciatica and nerve entrapment
- Headaches & Vertigo
- Sprains & Strains (including wrist, elbow, shoulder, ankle, knee, hip)
- Pregnancy-related Low Back and Pelvic Pain
- Sport-related Injury
What type of training do chiropractors receive?
Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) receive extensive musculoskeletal training and are considered primary health care providers. After completing their Bachelor's Degree, Chiropractors spend an additional 4 years completing their Doctor of Chiropractic degree, including a 12 month supervised internship in their final year. In order to practice in Ontario, every DC must successfully complete 3 intensive national board examinations and one provincial ethics examination.
What can I expect when I see my chiropractor for the first time?
On your initial visit, you can expect to spend 45-60 minutes with the chiropractor as they take a detailed history of your complaint, perform a physical assessment and compose an individualized treatment plan. The initial visit will include a diagnosis and complete explanation of the benefits and risks of chiropractic care and will be concluded with your first treatment, providing no further investigation is warranted.
Do I have to see my chiropractor forever?
The short answer is no. Many chiropractors are injury-focused with the main goal of treatment being to return the patient to optimal health and wellness so that they no longer need chiropractic care and can continue on their daily activities, pain free.
Are visits to a chiropractor covered by insurance?
Chiropractic care is not covered by provincial OHIP insurance, however, many private insurance benefit plans have an allowance for chiropractic coverage. You will need to consult your individual benefit provider to inquire about your coverage amount for chiropractic.
